Erva-Toira (Orobanche ramosa) defies the classic image of a plant: without chlorophyll and unable to photosynthesize, it survives by parasitizing host roots and extracting their resources. It has no leaves and lives completely underground. Nevertheless, its flowering shoots emerge above ground to produce seeds, allowing the parasite to spread to new hosts.
